ASSESSMENT COMPARISON

RECKON VS 16PERSONALITIES

The world's most popular free type test, and what it was not built to do

16Personalities is one of the most widely taken personality tests on the internet. Its reach is real. Reckon is built for a narrower use case: founders who want to understand how their wiring maps to the specific demands of starting and running a company.

01 · WHAT 16PERSONALITIES IS

16PERSONALITIES NERIS TYPE EXPLORER

16Personalities runs the NERIS Type Explorer, a free online assessment that assigns one of 16 personality types using a five-dimension framework loosely informed by Big Five trait research. The five dimensions produce a four-letter type code plus an Assertive or Turbulent identity modifier. The test takes about 10 minutes. The basic result and type description are free. Optional premium reports and career guides start at $29 as a one-time purchase. The assessment has been taken nearly 100 million times globally.

02 · WHERE 16PERSONALITIES FALLS SHORT FOR FOUNDERS

THE GAP

16Personalities is a consumer type test, not a founder assessment. It measures none of risk tolerance, locus of control, or need for achievement, which are the three constructs entrepreneurship researchers most consistently tie to founder outcomes. Type-based frameworks share a well-documented reliability concern: a meaningful share of test-takers receive a different type on retest within weeks, because dichotomous scoring treats near-midpoint scores as clear preferences. The assessment produces a type description rather than a gap analysis, which means there is no mechanism to compare your stated motivation against your actual wiring.

04 · WHY FOUNDERS PICK RECKON

THE FOUNDATION. THE GAP MECHANIC. THE OUTPUT.

The Foundation

Reckon is built on validated instruments: Big Five via NEO-PI-R and BFI-2, risk tolerance via DOSPERT, locus of control via the Rotter I-E Scale, and need for achievement via McClelland-rooted scales. The questions are original, anchored on those scales.

The Gap Mechanic

The first question asks what pulls you toward starting a company. After 70 forced-choice questions, the report compares your stated motivation against the archetype your answers actually point to. If there is a gap, the report names it directly.

Decision-Useful Output

The report tells you which businesses to refuse, which cofounder you need, and what your blind spots are. 70 forced-choice questions. About 30 minutes. $20, self-serve, no consultant.

05 · HONESTY

A STRAIGHT ANSWER ON VALIDATION

Reckon is built on validated instruments. It has not itself been independently validated. The FAQ explains the difference.

No independent lab has run a test-retest or criterion-validity study on Reckon. The report describes patterns, not predictions. Anyone who tells you their assessment is scientifically validated without citing specific published research is selling you something. See the methodology page for what the eight dimensions are anchored on and why the forced-choice format matters.
